Last year was my first, Caribana, Toronto's Caribbean Carnival Festival. I played mas with Carnival Nationz along with my girls: Nicole (Bumm), Nicole(Busy) and Pru. See pics here.

This year CNz has decided to pay special attention to one of the greatest figures in Caribbean history, something that has never been done before. An entertainer who needs no introduction… the "KING OF CALYPSO"… will be honoured in true CNz fashion for all the awe inspiring music that he has provided to us over the years. Call him by whatever name you know him: "Slinger Francisco" ~ "D'Birdie" ~ "The King"... we at CNz will simply call him "SPARROW D'LEGEND".
We had a Blast! I haven't decided if I'll be going this year.   Carnival Nationz launch was on Saturday and these costumes are very tempting:

Jean & Dinah (Blue or Fushia)

Drunk & Disorderly (Burgundy)

De Lizard (Green & Yellow)

Saltfish (Silver)

Royal Jail (Orange & Yellow)

Congo Man (Brown)

D'Birdie (Aqua, Yellow, Pink)

Obeah Wedding (Purple)

Big Bamboo (Beige & Brown)

Sa Sa Yea (Teal)

Jane (Black & Pink)

Sexy Marajin (Red & Gold)

My Favorite is Saltfish Frontline

Pru, my fellow carnival junkie, said the launch was good. She said the  costumes are  way more beautiful in person. She also said the models did not do a good job in showing the costumes. Pru does not agree with my costume pick :( She said it looked " too outta space." I told her that's what I liked about it. It's unusual. She said "saltfish is a different costume alright."  Look like I might have to find someplace else to stay if  I decide to go with salfish. She probably won't let me bring it in her house. LOL. I'm feeling the headpiece, the bum pack, and the fact that it's different. A trip to Toronto may be necessary to see my options up close...
Pru's top picks are: Conga Man FL (frontline), Jean and Dinah, Drunk and Disorderly, Jane, Sexy Marajin, and  Sa Sa Yea one-piece . My top picks are SALTFISH FL, Jean and Dinah  FL, Jane FL and Drunk and Disorderly. Registration beings tomorrow. Lets see which sections sell off.

The U.S. Virgin Islands has a rich history and encompasses a people as diverse just the same. Whether you are descendants of slaves brought to the U.S. territory, someone who migrated from the neighboring islands or descendants of those who have migrated from other islands, or you visited and fell in love with the islands, there is always that question, “Who is a Virgin Islander?” Some may remember this question sparking many conversations as well as debates by the Constitutional Convention debate.
The All Ah We project is a multimedia presentation that contains a black-and-white pictorial presentation showcasing 40 Virgin Islanders from all walks of life and their respective answers to that question. In addition to people telling their stories, the presentation will also entail taped-recordings, and in some cases, video clips. The project is the brainchild of photojournalist Michael Nissman. “This is a very personal story for me,” Nissman said recently. “As someone with a mixed background, I’ve often wondered about this question of identity and how we identify with our background, birthplace, culture, ideas.

This portrait series will be featured as an exhibit in the VIHC sponsored forum “Building Community, Celebrating Diversity” scheduled May 7th and 8th 2010 on St. Thomas.

Here are my Favorites:

Last weekend while in NYC, my friends and I crossed another Broadway play off of our list. Everything  I've seen on Broadway has been musicals so I didn't know what expect. The first few minutes took some getting use to. I was waiting for David Allen Grier to shimmy across the stage. No song and dance and they still manages to keep my interest. I definitely prefer musicals. We also decided to get seats in the mezzanine. NEVER AGAIN will I do that! I'll stick to center orchestra...thank you very much.

Race is about 2 lawyers, Jack Lawson (James Spader) and Henry Brown (David Alan Grier). They are partners in a small l law firm, which has taken on a young, Ivy-League educated African American associate named Susan (Kerry Washington). Charles Strickland (Richard Thomas), a white billionaire, seeks representation. He’s been accused of raping an African American woman, a crime he vehemently denies committing. Henry doesn’t want to touch the case; he thinks it's unwinnable. But after what appear to be inexperienced missteps by Susan, the firm is obliged to defend Charles Strickland.

Most harbor bacteria that can lead to infection — think staph, strep, even E. coli. But if you test makeup properly, you can remain safe.

You know that sharing makeup is a no-no, and for good reason.
"If a woman has a cut on her lip and borrows lipstick from someone who has a cold sore, she'll get a cold sore. You can pass herpes [the cold sore virus], conjunctivitis [pink eye] and all sorts of things through sharing makeup," says Dr. Zein Obagi, a dermatologist based in Beverly Hills.
Now imagine sharing your makeup with a few thousand or so of your closest friends when you sample makeup in testers in stores. If you don't insist on practicing safe hygiene, or insist that the workers behind the counter practice safe hygiene when they're applying makeup to your skin, it can get ugly fast.
Dr. Elizabeth Brooks, a biological sciences professor at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, conducted a much-quoted two-year study on public makeup testers when she was with Rowan University in New Jersey about five years ago. "We went to department stores, specialty stores, drugstores — everywhere," she says. Her researchers found staph, strep and even E. coli bacteria on makeup testers. "Wherever you see E. coli, you should just think ‘E. coli equals feces,' " Brooks says. "That means someone went to the bathroom, didn't wash their hands and then stuck their fingers in that moisturizer." Brooks says that when they tested the makeup on Saturdays — the day with the most traffic at cosmetic counters — the percentage of tainted makeup was 100%.
The FDA concurs. In recommendations for cosmetic safety, the agency warns against sharing makeup, saying, "Don't share or swap eye cosmetics — not even with your best friend. Another person's germs may be hazardous to you. The risk of contamination may be even greater with ‘testers' at retail stores, where a number of people are using the same sample product."But there are solutions. For instance, if you want to try lotions, use samples that people don't have to put their fingers into; instead of sampling from a jar, try a lotion you can squeeze on instead.
You can also clean the surface of the makeup tester with a tissue or a tissue dipped in alcohol before applying makeup. If you're trying lipstick, debride it with a disposable applicator. And always use disposable applicators or cotton swabs, never communal makeup brushes. "If the brush is made of animal hair, bacteria can grow into the actual hair and be harder to clean," Brooks says. You can also ask for a clean tester.

"Every makeup display that we tested, and we tested hundreds, always had disposable brushes and little pads to put on makeup, and they had all of that behind the counter but it was for the asking — they didn't have it for the general public just to pick up at their leisure," Brooks says. "And of course your Avon or Mary Kay lady had one-shot testers that have just enough to put on your lips or eyes, and some of the bigger brands had one-shot testers of foundation, lipstick or eye shadow as well — but not every brand carries that."
Brooks' most adamant advice is not to test publicly used makeup on your eyes, nose or mouth. "Mascara is the most troubling," Brooks says. "I have two teenage daughters —I tell them never, ever, ever use a tester mascara because there could be cross-contamination, and this is your eye — there could be some serious ramifications."
Brooks says a lipstick is usable if the surface layer is scraped off or if it is dipped in alcohol. "But if you're asking me if I would personally try a public lipstick tester or if I would let my teenage daughters do that, the answer is no. I would ask for an individual tester," she says. "Even when the ladies [behind the counter] are very diligent about dipping it in alcohol, they're not lab technicians and I'm not 100% sure about it. Viruses are so small in comparison to bacteria it's harder to get rid of a virus. Lipstick you can actually test on your hand and see if you like the color. I also wouldn't test something like a face cream where I could not remove the top surface."
But despite all of her research, Brooks is not a makeup killjoy. "Even doing all of this research, I'm not afraid or afraid to send my daughters to the mall. I just tell them not to put anything near their eyes, nose or mouth and you'll be OK. I want women to be happy that they're women and enjoy makeup but just be careful."
Please be safe!

This is going to be a good fight to LOOK at tonight. While at Sprint yesterday waiting on my new blackberry, their weigh in was showing. Everyone stopped, the store got silent and we all stared at the TV screen. At the end, a customer gave me a tissue; he said I was drooling. LOL. It was nice to SEE these Boxers get on the scale in their boxers. I'm still trying to find a fight party to crash. My coins are on Mosley only cause Mayweather full ah big chat.
My other new obsession is my new lipstick Funny Face by NARS. This fuchsia lipstick has blue undertones and is very bold. I've been into nude/neutral gloss for several years now; so this was a bold step that I was ready to take. It goes on velvet smooth and dries semi-matte making application easy. It's highly pigmented so it stays put all day. It definitely took some getting use to...actually only the amount of time it took to try it then pay for it.  Lol. I'm loving it!

I went to NYC last weekend...yes, again. It's my favorite city that I love and hate at the same time. I obviously love it wayyyyyyyy more than I hate it.

On Saturday, my friends and I went to see Race on Broadway (I'll tell you about that later) and then planned on going to SOB's to see Fay-Ann Lyons.  We got to the Village early and decided to grab something lite to eat before heading to SOB's. Not familiar with the area, we decided to just walk down Bleecker St. and see what we stumble upon. Cafe Espanol was our first stop. While glancing over the outdoor menu, 2 guys said "the sangria is really good." I saw that they had passion fruit sangria and it was a done deal.
Welcome to CAFÉ ESPAÑOL The combination of over 50 Tapas dishes, delicious menu specials, paellas and wide range of Spanish wines and beers served in our warm and colorful surroundings, make it a truly unique experience. Our friendly staff is eager to serve you and your family our delicious Spanish dishes. Stop by today at our Bleecker Street location in New York City.
Cafe Espanol, located in the "Heart of Greenwich Village"on Bleecker Street, offers patrons a wide variety of authentic Spanish cuisine. Specialty items include paella flavored with real wild saffron, imported Spanish manchego cheese and Serrano ham or imported pulpo, all to highlight the diner's experience!
Cara had shrimp in garlic sauce.

Juliette and I had guacamole and chips.

The best part of our experience at Cafe Espanol: Passion fruit sangria.

This passion fruit sangria was so good. We sat there for almost 2 hours and had a pitcher and eventually a half pitcher. I can't vouch for the food, but this was the best sangria I've ever had in my life! By the end of the night, the server was our friend and he shared the recipe:

Passion Fruit Sangria at Cafe Espanol
Passion fruit juice
Cointreau
Red Wine
Brandy
Club Soda
Splash of Sprite or 7up
Chopped or sliced apples and oranges (I'm sure you can use whatever fruits you like)
Ice
Pitcher/Carafe/Punch bowl with a wooden spoon
Good friends

I hope I didn't forget anything, especially after a pitcher and a half of  passion fruit sangria. I'm going to try to recreate this during Memorial Day weekend. Wish me luck!
