Last weekend I saw Stick Fly on Broadway. All I knew was that Alicia Keys was one of the producers and the dude from Psych was in it (Juliette is obsessed with him). I had absolutely no expectations but I knew it had to be good if Juliette wanted to see it for a second time (I'm sure Dulé Hill was the main reason LOL).

I've seen several plays on Broadway and this is up there close to the top of my list. I will admit that by intermission I was a little worried and felt like I was watching your typical black reality show on Bravo or VH1. By the end...I wanted more! The entire cast was on point and the plot and characters developed so beautifully, that I forgot about my Bravo/VH1 theory. Patience...

They were all sooo good! I would absolutely see it again!!!!

Alicia Keys will lead intimate post-show conversations with the cast and special guests!

Looking for a free Broadway show? Well, almost.
The cast and band of the acclaimed Broadway show, Fela!, will be making a free appearance on Monday at Brooklyn Bridge Park, presented by St. Anne’s Warehouse.
The show, entitled The Music of Fela Kuti, will showcase the music of the Afrobeat legend, as sung by Fela! star Sahr Ngaujah.
The show will take place on Monday, Oct. 4th, and the lawn will open at 6 PM.   Lawn capacity at Brooklyn Bridge Park is limited, so first come, first served.
Here is another reason why I miss NYC! Fela! is probably the best Broadway play I've seen.  Energy from beginning to end and the music is amazing. You can read more about Fela! here and here.

I told you about my experience at FELA! a few months ago.  Well, you can enjoy the music without going to Broadway. Everyone can get their FELA! on with the new cast recording album, released this week. You can purchase the album here.

Backed by the irrepressibly funky Antibalas, FELA! The Original Broadway Cast Recording features the incomparable Sahr Ngaujah as Fela, Lilias White as Funmilayo (Fela’s mother), and Saycon Sengbloh as Sandra Izadore (Fela’s American girlfriend) singing all 16 of the Fela compositions that are performed on stage. This recording captures the electricity and joy that thousands have experienced at the Eugene O’Neill Theater every night since the play opened on November 23, 2009, and is not only a document of that experience, but also a musical statement in its own right.
Close you eyes and pretend you're there with the full length tracks below. My favs are #1, #4, #7, #8, #9, #11, #13 and #22.

Last weekend while in NYC, my friends and I crossed another Broadway play off of our list. Everything  I've seen on Broadway has been musicals so I didn't know what expect. The first few minutes took some getting use to. I was waiting for David Allen Grier to shimmy across the stage. No song and dance and they still manages to keep my interest. I definitely prefer musicals. We also decided to get seats in the mezzanine. NEVER AGAIN will I do that! I'll stick to center orchestra...thank you very much.

Race is about 2 lawyers, Jack Lawson (James Spader) and Henry Brown (David Alan Grier). They are partners in a small l law firm, which has taken on a young, Ivy-League educated African American associate named Susan (Kerry Washington). Charles Strickland (Richard Thomas), a white billionaire, seeks representation. He’s been accused of raping an African American woman, a crime he vehemently denies committing. Henry doesn’t want to touch the case; he thinks it's unwinnable. But after what appear to be inexperienced missteps by Susan, the firm is obliged to defend Charles Strickland.

One of the reason for my NYC trip was to see FELA,  Race or Fences on Broadway. We went to TKTS booth at South Street Seaport to purchase discounted tickets. After waiting for about 15 minutes in the line we got tickets for FELA for $75.

Fela Anikupapo Kuti is a Nigerian composer, musician, performer and human rights activist. He was arrested more than 200 times by a Nigerian government unhappy with his use of music and political meetings to address human rights issues in his homeland. In 1977 during a second government-sanctioned attack, over 1,000 Nigerian soldiers attacked his Kalakuta compound. Fela suffered a fractured skull as well as other broken bones.  His 82-year old mother was thrown from an upstairs window, inflicting injuries that would eventually kill her. The soldiers set fire to the compound and prevented fire fighters from reaching the area. Fela's recording studio, all his master tapes and musical instruments were destroyed. Known simply as Fela, when he died in 1997, he was an international superstar who left some 70 albums as his legacy. Nearly 1 million people attended his funeral.

Fela's Afrobeat music is blend of jazz, funk, salsa and calypso, with juju, highlife, African percussive patterns and harmonies.

The play was amazing! I laughed, cried (on the inside) danced and sang. I was in awe the entire time. The performers gave an unerring account of a night at The Shrine, Fela's nightclub.
